Syllabus for the CSM course offered by the Scrum Alliance

Companies of all sizes adopt the agile scrum methodology because it enables excellent project-based teamwork and productivity. Although agile and scrum are two distinct methodologies that can be used separately, their combined benefits make the agile scrum methodology the most broadly applied use of agile.

Topics:

  • Agile Manifesto
  • 12 Principles
  • 4 values
  • Scrum Foundations (5 Scrum Values)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define the Agile Manifesto’s 12 principles and 4 ideals.
  • Show the advantages of Agile project management’s “responding to change” strategy over traditional project management’s “following a plan.”
  • Describe the connections between the Scrum objects, events, and roles and the Scrum values (courage, focus, commitment, respect, and openness).
  • The three Scrum pillars of Transparency, Inspection, and Adaptation should be listed and explained.
  • Identify the distinctions between a framework and a methodology, and explain why Scrum is referred to as a framework.
  • Describe five approaches to adopt an agile mentality.
  • Give two examples of how Agile and Scrum differ from one another and why the two phrases should not be used interchangeably.

The Scrum Master, the product owner, and the development team members are the three separate positions that make up a Scrum team. There is only one Scrum Master and one product owner, although there are typically multiple members of the development team.

Topics:

  • Scrum Master roles and challenges
  • Product Owner roles and responsibilities
  • Development team roles and responsibilities

Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform a retrospective to identify 3 approaches that will enhance performance and turnaround time.
  • Describe the duties that a Scrum Master and a Product Owner have.
  • Explain why the roles of a Scrum Master and a product owner should not overlap by listing three contrasts between them.
  • Talk about the role of the product owner as a liaison between the development team and the stakeholders.
  • Recognize why a Scrum Master facilitates rather than actively participates in Scrum activities and ceremonies.
  • List three drawbacks of having a development team of fewer than three or more than ten people.

Even in the face of complexity, the key to agile and scrum project management is simplicity. Additionally, despite being straightforward, scrum ceremonies can be challenging to understand. Self-organizing teams that can solve issues in agile contexts are necessary for Scrum. Scrum ceremonies are done to enable transparency and consistent communication in the midst of such circumstances. Scrum and agile teams only hold meetings known as scrum ceremonies or agile ceremonies.

Topics:

  • Sprint planning
  • Daily Scrum
  • Sprint Review
  • Sprint Retrospective

  • Give three approaches to prevent spillover from the sprint backlog.
  • Discuss the five advantages of having a sprint objective and define sprint goals.
  • Recognize the manner in which the Product Owner and Scrum Master should coordinate with the team and provide five suggestions for enhancing these interactions.
  • Talk about the three negative effects of sprint cancellation and how to prevent it.
  • List 10 sprint anti-patterns and understand how they affect delivery and turnaround time (examples: sprint cancellation, variable sprint length).

  • List five anti-patterns for sprint reviews (such delayed acceptance) and their detrimental effects.

Planning, executing out, controlling, attending daily stand-ups, and communicating with the Scrum teams are all part of the sprint execution process. By satisfying the team members’ notion of done, a list of product backlog items is transformed into a potentially shippable product increment as the result of the sprint execution.

  • Describe the two roles that the Product Owner, Development team, and Scrum Master perform in daily scrum.
  • What are the three most important questions about the daily scrum agenda.
  • List two duties that the development team, product owner, and scrum master have at the sprint retrospective.

Scrum Alliance, a well-known Agile membership and certification organisation for professionals, offers a variety of Scrum certification levels. The certifying organisation feels that understanding Scrum requires a high level of personal engagement. Scrum Alliance’s newly created course format encourages team members to collaborate, boost productivity, and achieve success.

If you’re interested in your Agile journey, joining the Scrum Alliance community provides you with a networking platform and allows you to connect with other Scrum practitioners. It assists you in achieving future progress through certification, knowledge exchange, and community support, all of which are uncommon in the IT industry.

To apply for the CSM certification, you must fulfill the following three steps:

  • Make sure you understand Scrum and that you have completed all of the prerequisites for the CSM course.
  • Attend a 2-day CSM training led by a Certified Scrum Trainer in person.
  • Fill out an application for the exam.

The software development process is the focus of the CSM and PSM certifications. Neither one is superior to the other. The certificate you should pursue is determined by your present knowledge and objectives. Here are some key distinctions between the two that can assist you in making your decision:

  • Getting the certification

Attending the 2-day training will earn you the CSM certification. You must enroll in an institute and complete the required training. After completing the course, you will be given two free opportunities to pass the exam within a 90-day period. You will be charged a $25 USD test attempt fee if you fail the test twice or take it after 90 days. There are three levels of PSM certification offered by Scrum.org: PSM I, II, and III. You must purchase a password from scrum.org in order to enroll. You must have a thorough understanding of Scrum in order to pass the PSM I exam.

  • Passing rank

You need at least 74% marks in the exam to get the CSM certification exam. For PSM, you need at least 85%.

  • Exam pattern

Depending on the level, CSM may contain solely multiple choice questions, while PSM may have multiple choice questions, true/false type questions, multiple response questions, and essay type questions.

  • Need for renewal

The CSM accreditation is only good for two years. Your certificate must be renewed every two years for a fee of $100. PSM, on the other hand, does not require renewal. The certification will be valid for the rest of your life if you pass the exam.

Scrum’s exponential expansion, paired with its adoption in 65 percent of IT organisations worldwide, highlights the need for Certified ScrumMasters who can help with complicated project execution. A CSM certification helps to solidify your position as an Agilist capable of leading projects to completion.

A Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM) training workshop is led by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and teaches the Scrum vocabulary, methods, and principles necessary to operate as a ScrumMaster or member of a Scrum team. This certification is the first step toward a successful Agile career.

A Certified ScrumMaster® training, according to Scrum Alliance, increases the likelihood of a project’s overall success by properly utilising Scrum concepts and methodologies. You can function as a servant leader, rising above and beyond the usual project manager and assisting your business in achieving meaningful goals by knowing the values, practices, and applications.

The number of job openings is steadily expanding, which is driving up demand for competent and skilled scrummasters. Our training will offer you an advantage in the job market and help you land a high-paying position that will position you to take your Agile journey in a new direction.

Scrum Alliance certifications offer a variety of ways to demonstrate your competence and experience as a Scrum and Agile practitioner. Scrum Alliance offers three levels of Scrum Master certification:

  1. CSM (Certified ScrumMaster)

Introductory course for those wishing to become a ScrumMaster or play a role as a Scrum team member.

  1. A-CSM (Advanced – Certified ScrumMaster)

Advanced course for those who have work experience as a Scrum Master.

  1. CSP (Certified Scrum Professional)

Pinnacle/Expert-level course for individuals wishing to build mastery in the Scrum Master role.

Agile refers to a way of thinking about software development. Scrum, along with Kanban and Extreme Programming, is the most extensively used Agile framework.

When the “Manifesto for Agile Software Development” was published in 2001, the term “agile” was coined. The authors were the two founders of the Scrum framework, as well as 15 others who shared their perspective on software development. The manifesto emphasises the importance of delivering software that customers value early and often during the development process. This manner, based on user input, what is delivered can be altered quickly throughout development. To make this possible, developers must work closely with one another as well as with their clients.

Scrum gives a framework for working with an Agile attitude. Scrum is described in a more generic fashion, despite its origins in software development. It’s also used in fields other than software, like marketing. The framework assists a self-organizing team in completing tasks on a regular basis and in close collaboration. Throughout the development process, there will be numerous opportunities to check what has been produced thus far and to improve the way the job is done.

Your next step toward a Certified Scrum Professional after earning your CSM certification and a year of experience working as a CSM on a Scrum Team is to achieve your Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM℠) certification.
